Taking 23 months to build, test and train, the MMDDE X-17 is the first of its kind in the world. This drug discovery behemoth is located in an undisclosed location to prevent any unwanted attention, however is secured by private security firm Blackwater. Standing 6 stories high with mobile capability, only 10 people are needed to run the factory (another small team of people run the facilities to support the system). The X-17 has built-in spectrometers of all types, chemical synthesis hardware, liquid handling and artificial intelligence engines to make screen decisions (see the X-17 schematic below). The unit includes a 5th floor, fully staffed clinical unit that can house up to 500 people for extended trials of up to 6 months. Approximately 90% of all interactions, including measurement and recording, with patients are done automatically.
The X-17 uses a proprietary 'pipeline' system that can search for a novel NCE and simultaneously manufacture up to a kilo of active ingredient. The drug is then administered automatically, direct from the factory, to the appropriate patients housed on the 5th floor. When the X-17 comes fully online, we expect to be able to discover and test 2-3 drugs per month.
Molecular Molecules is also developing medical devices for various markets which is done in a more traditional manner at our laboratory in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
